When God's work of creating has ceased; when the heavens have
disappeared and the stars are quenched; when spirits rise from
their retreats and wander in the depths with sighs and groans;
then, what unpicturable delight for thee! Then shalt thou sit on
the eternal thrones of heaven and of hell--shalt overthrow the
planets, stars, and worlds--shalt loose thy steed in fields of
emeralds and diamonds--shalt make his litter of the wings torn
from the angels,--shalt cover him with the robe of righteousness!
Thy saddle shall be broidered with the stars of the empyrean,--and
then thou wilt destroy it! After thou hast annihilated everything,
--when naught remains but empty space,--thy coffin shattered and
thine arrows broken, then make thyself a crown of stone from
heaven's highest mount, and cast thyself into the abyss of oblivion.
Thy fall may last a million aeons, but thou shalt die at last.
Because the world must end; all, all must die,--except Satan!
Immortal more than God! I live to bring chaos into other worlds!

from 'The Dance of Death'(1838), Gustave Flaubert

(samples from the poem featured in Gnaw Their Tongues track 'The stench of dead horses on my breath and the vile of existence in my hands')

BORN AGAIN

I’m looking at my wounds and draw them aside.
Wider. Deeper.
My hand’s plunged inside, twisting the knife.
Seeing the plague’s face taking shape doesn’t scare me anymore.
Seeing the plague coming out of my wounds liberates me.
I’m close to dying a thousand times
But this time I allowed myself to cry.
Rivers of salt to feel lighter than a feather.
Why the contact with the ground should be painful if I know I’m falling ?
Arms in a cross, ready to absorb the shock.
I just know I can’t go lower.
There is no under.
Just me, myself and I.
And the will to stay or to climb.
Light is brighter from the dark
And I want to kiss the sun.
Not to drown in what’s supposed to make me breathe.
I, born again.
Listen to the screams coming out of my wounds, free from the plague.
Listen to the screams coming out of the hole, holding the sound of joy and pleasure.
Listen to my screams announcing the birth of a new man.
I, born again.
Until the bell tolls, nothing’s finished, nothing’s done.
Until the bell tolls, I am immortal.

"The world soon to be largely populated by men who would eat your children in front of your eyes and the cities themselves held by cores of blackened looters who tunneled among the ruins and crawled from the rubble white of tooth and eye carrying charred and anynymous tins of food in nylon nets like shoppers in the commissaries of hell. The soft black talc blew through the streets like squid ink uncoiling along a sea floor and the cold crept down and the dark came early and the scavengers passing down the steep canyons with their torches trod silky holes in the drifted ash that closed behind them silently as eyes. Out on the roads the pilgrims sank down and fell over and died and the bleak and shrouded earth went trundling past the sun and returned again as trackless and as unremarked as the path of any nameless sisterworld in the ancient dark beyond.

...

Perhaps in the world’s destruction it would be possible at last to see how it was made. Oceans, mountains. The ponderous counterspectacle of things ceasing to be. The sweeping waste, hydroptic and coldly secular. The silence."

from 'The Road' by Cormac McCarthy

A Vast Confusion

Long long I lay in the sands

Sounds of trains in the surf
in subways of the sea
And an even greater undersound
of a vast confusion in the universe
a rumbling and a roaring
as of some enormous creature turning
under sea and earth
a billion sotto voices murmuring
a vast muttering
a swelling stuttering
in ocean's speakers
world's voice-box heard with ear to sand
a shocked echoing
a shocking shouting
of all life's voices lost in night
And the tape of it
someow running backwards now
through the Moog Synthesizer of time
Chaos unscrambled
back to the first
harmonies
And the first light

TEMPEST
Edwin Torres
We will storm our planes on you.
—Osama bin Laden

everyone will feel better
hearing what you are saying
since what you are saying
no one told you to say
everyone will feel better
hearing what you are saying
since what you are saying
no one told you to say

a number of people
have gathered and stopped
for whatever it takes
to say what you say
a number of people
have gathered and stopped
for whatever it takes
to say what you say

something is happening
that hasn't been seen
making what happens
the opposite of seeing
something is happening
that hasn't been seen
making what happens
the opposite of seeing

saying what there is
in a time like now
means never knowing time
if time can be right
saying what there is
in a time like now
means never knowing time
if time can be right

it is your job
to witness your world
to tell who will listen
so they listen like you
it is your job
to witness your world
to tell who will listen
so they listen like you

we will storm you with words
you will have an entire ocean
we will make you our raindrop
you will have no umbrella
we will teach you our water
you will drown in our words
we will give you an ocean
you will swim in our wash
we will make you our rain
you will have no umbrella
we will water your ocean
you will drown in our words
we will swim in your storm
you will rain in our ocean
we will teach you our water
you will drown in our words

BLOODY PAINTINGS BY MIKE EGAN
www.eganpaintings.com

You've heard the story of Jesse James
Of how he lived and died
If you're still in need
Of something to read
Here's the story of Bonnie and Clyde.

Now Bonnie and Clyde are the Barrow gang
I'm sure you all have read
How they rob and steal
And those who squeal
Are usually found dyin' or dead.

They call them cold-hearted killers
They say they are heartless and mean
But I say this with pride
That I once knew Clyde
When he was honest and upright and clean.

But the laws fooled around
Kept takin' him down
And lockin' him up in a cell
Till he said to me: "I'll never be free
So I'll meet a few of them in Hell."

If a policeman is killed in Dallas
And they have no clue to guide
If they can't find a fiend
They just wipe their slate clean
And hang it on Bonnie and Clyde

If they try to act like citizens
And rent them a nice little flat
About the third night
They're invited to fight
By a sub-guns' rat-a-tat-tat.

Some day, they'll go down together
They'll bury them side by side
To a few, it'll be grief
To the law, a relief
But it's death for Bonnie and Clyde.

Poem read aloud by Bonnie Parker - from the movie 'Bonnie & Clyde' ('67) by Arthur Penn

'All it takes is One Bad Day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy. That's how far the world is from where i am. Just one bad day.'

'Ladies and gentlemen! You've read about it in the newspapers! Now, shudder as you observe, before your very eyes, that most rare and tragic of nature's mistakes! I give you the average man! Physically unremarkable, it has instead a deformed set of values. Notice the hideously bloated sense of humanity's importance. The club footed social conscience and the withered optimism. Most repulsive of all, are its frail and useless notions of order and sanity. If too much weight is placed upon them they snap. How does this poor, pathetic specimen survive in today's harsh and irrational world? The sad answer is "not very well".'
